Abiotic Factors
Typical Climate of the Great Barrier Reef is tropical. During the Summer, the temperature is between 75 and 91 degrees fahrenheit. During the winter the temperature is between 57 and 91 fahrenheit. Winter, or the "Dry", season begins in May and ends in October and has sunshine, cool breezes and low humidity. Summer, or the "Wet"' season, is from November to April and has tropical downpours and occasional dramatic storms. An abiotic factor that plays a main role in maintaining the Great Barrier Reef is buoyancy. Buoyancy is the ability or tendency to float in water, air, or some other fluids. It influences the great barrier reef because it determines what components of the Great Barrier Reef, such as corals, would float or sink. Another component that affects the Great Barrier Reef is light penetration. Light Penetration is important because light only gets to the first 20 meters below the ocean surface and anything below 20 meters needs to have another way to absorb energy. This influences biotic factors because plants need sunlight to survive, and if there is no sunlight, they must either grow taller, or find another way to contain the sunlight needed to survive.vive.
